He was sold as a yearling to Japanese billionaire Tsurumaki, and was trained by Neil Drysdale throughout his career. He was ridden by Eddie Delahoussaye in all of his races.

At two, he ran four times and won thrice, finishing fourth on debut before having an undescended testicle removed and winning the rest of his races that year, including an allowance and the Grade I Hollywood Futurity.

At 3, he ran seven times, winning all but two.

Among those victories were the Grade I Santa Anita Derby, the Grade II Peter Pan, the Grade I Belmont, and the Grade I Breeders' Cup Classic. He was pointed to the Kentucky Derby as a favorite but had to be scratched on the eve of the race due to a hoof injury.
